ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
First of all, I am grateful for having had parents
who shared their pride of ancestry with me around the
dinner table with stories about their predecessors,
some of which were of use to me in later times when I
began serious research into family history. To those
elderly souls no longer with us who helped to link the
present generation with those of the past, I owe much:
to name a few, Gaston P. Sutton, who in Miami, Florida,
almost 50 years ago gave me information on the first
two generations of the Melvins which he later passed on
to LeRoy Reeves to be used in "Family Sketches", now
used as the basis for this and all other genealogies of
the Daniel Melvin family; to the late, Anabell Lane for
sharing her notes on the McCoulskey and McColl lines;
to my mother's late cousin, Vandalia Sewell Cain, and
her daughter, Ruth Cain Roundtree, for their contribution
on the Smith and Downing records. To my dear aunt, Lena
McKay Melvin, whose notes were generously rendered me by
her daughter, Norma Melvin Bundy, I am greatly indebted
for material that was contained only in her private pa-
pers. Furthermore, I am indebted to Norma Melvin Bundy
for the contribution on the Young family and the able as-
sistance of hers in final preparation of this manuscript
for publication. To Dr. William C. Powell, Betty Cappo
and Betty McKay Frain I extend my thanks for the help
given on the McKay, McKeithan and McCall families. To
W. Harold Broughton and Clara Tysor Atwater I owe more
than I can explain here for their notes on Chatham Co.
relatives of Lucy Bynum Lambeth, my patient wife, who
helped in more ways than one in getting out this book.
For help on the Robeson and Bartram Families I give
thanks to Mary Bartram Robeson Hunter, Dr. Francis Har-
per and indirectly through Charles Colvin Council, Mrs.
Ida Robeson Irvine. For contributions on many families
I am indebted to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Atkinson, and with-
