     Armfield Melvin was a successful merchant in Randle-
     man, N.C., and was serving on the board of trustees
     for the Community Colleges, by appointment of Gov.
     Holshouser, when he died. Children of John Armfield
     Melvin and Elizabeth Aydelette:
     son, Gene Rodney Melvin. born 7 Feb. 1937. Married 1
          June 1958 Nancy Elizabeth Estridge, born 29 Dec.
          1938. Children:
          son, Stephen Douglas Melvin, born 13 May 1959.
          dau. Janie Ann Melvin, born 4 March 1964.
     dau. Valerie Lynn Melvin, born 30 June 1947. Married
          21 Aug. 1965 Bruce Lee Fritsch, born 23 March
          1946. Children:
          dau. Julaine Lee Fritsch, born 1 Jan. 1970.
son, Harold Alexander Melvin, born 10 Aug. 1914, died 14
     October 1918.
son, Harry Stedman Melvin, born 10 Aug. 1914 (twin of the
     above), died 24 Feb. 1960. Married 11 June 1933 Kath-
     erine Byers. Children:

     son, James Conley Melvin, born 23 Nov. 1935. Lives in
          Virginia.

          By a marriage of 22 June 1940 to a second wife,
          Eula Herring, Harry Steadman Melvin had one child:
          dau. Georgianna Melvin, born 3 Nov. 1942. Married
               Irvin Lambert.
son, Roy Simpson Melvin, born 16 Dec. 1916, died 9 Aug. 19-
     64, Florence, S.C. Married 30 Sept. 1939 Bette Mae
     Whitley, One child (adopted):
     dau. Bette Ann Melvin, born 12 Aug. 1946. Married, first,
          Charles Vaught, second, Richard Leach.
     In World War II Roy S. Melvin was a corporal in the
     Army when the Japanese pulled their sneak attack on
     Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. He fought on Luzon until
     all of his outfit was killed in battle and he was re-
     turned to Ft. Bragg, N.C., a sole survivor suffering
     from shell shock. Somehow, he managed to leave the
     hospital there and attempted to find his home in Greens-
     boro, N.C., and was found lying in an unconscious state
     on the streets and was taken to the old Piedmont Hos-
     pital where he was held for treatment and identifi-
     cation since there was no indentification on his per-
     son. After three days his family learned about his
     presence and came to see him. After this he was sent
     to an Army hospital in Virginia and in time he made
     a full recovery. He went into business in Florence,
     S.C. where he became wealthy, it is reported.
dau. Ethel Marie Melvin, born 2 June 1919 in Greensboro,
     N.C. Married 26 February 1949 Maj. Sebastian Bernard
     di Martina of San Francisco, Cal., son of Patrina Bran-
     cato. Maj. di Martina's name was up for the commission
     of Lt. Colonel in the Air Force when he had a heart at-
     tack in the Philippines in about 1953 resulting in his
     death on the 21st of Aug. 1963, ending his military ca-
     reer which began in 1940. Marie has her grandfather's
