          automobile accident 19 March 1946.

     1895. Married Charles Cogdell. No issue.
son, Jefferson Davis Johnson, born in White Oak, N.C., 11
     Sept. 1898. Married Ola Mae Matheney. No issue.
dau. Margaret Ann Johnson, born in White Oak, N.C., 2 May
     1901. Unmarried.
son, Judge WILLIAM LESLIE JOHNSON, born 9 April 1903 in White
     Oak, N.C. Died in an accident 26 Aug. 1966. Married 4
     Sept. 1938 Alice Morgan, a school teacher. For many years
     he was Judge of Recorders Court in Bladen County.
dau. Phoebe Elizabeth Johnson, born 26 Dec. 1908 at White
     Oak, Bladen County, N.C. Married Dan Edward Freeman.

Son of JAMES H. MELVIN (1815-1860) of Bladen County, N.C.,
and Matilda Parker of Sampson County, N.C. Born in Bladen
County, N.C., 6 Oct. 1851, died 13 Feb, 1936. Resided in
Roseboro, N.C. Married, first, Annie Emaline Melvin, born
19 March 1841, died 5 Aug. 1912, the daughter of ROBERT
MELVIN (1801-1891?) and Martha Smith (1813-1871). No issue.
Married, second, Emma Smith, born 17 Oct. 1879, died 12 Oct.
1915. No issue known. Married, third, Alice Zenobia Melvin,
born 19 May 1887, died 5 Jan. 1921, the daughter of IRVIN
MELVIN (1839-1915) and Penny Armstrong. Children of AMMIE
MELVIN and Alice Zenobia Melvin:
dau. Maude Melvin, born 23 May 1918 in Roseboro, N.C. Well
     known in her area for her fine voice, Maude was frequently
     called upon to perform at funerals and weddings. Married 6
     Aug. 1940 Robert Faison Butler, born 16 April 1912. In ad-
     dition to rearing their family of two daughters, the Butlers
     fostered a student, Rufus Ray Freeman, and contributed to
     his education. Children of Maude Melvin and Robert Faison
     Butler:
     dau. Cheryl Fuller Butler, born 26 June 1944 in Roseboro,
          N.C. Married, first, Jerry Linton Hayes. Children:
          dau. Sonya Linton Hayes, born 10 Feb. 1964.

               (Cheryl married, second, Ronnie J. Lambert. No
               issue to date by this marriage, 30 Dec. 1977.)
          dau. Junette Vaughn Butler, born 19 Nov. 1947. Married
               Oggie Bennie Tew, III, born 26 July 1947. Child.:
               dau. Kimberly Vaughn Tew, born 17 May 1969.
               son, Oggie Bennie Tew, IV, born 31 Aug. 1977.
dau. Alice Melvin, stillborn 3 Jan. 1921. Mother died two
     days later.
 
     (AMMIE MELVIN married, fourth, Addie Sessoms. Infor-
     mation incomplete, but a daughter, Alreta Melvin Sum-
     merford, lives in South Carolina.) About a mile and one
     half northeast of the old ROBERT MELVIN home on Little
     Turnbull Creek in Bladen County, N.C., there is an old
     house site that was called "The Ammie Melvin Place"
     where, evidently, AMMIE MELVIN once lived.
