Novella Underwood of Cumberland or Sampson County,
N.C.
son, John A. Melvin, born in Cumberland County, N.C. Mar-
ried 26 March 1859 Emmaline Smith.
son, Fennel Melvin, born 8 May 1850 in Cumberland County,
N.C., died 7 Oct. 1913 in Bladen County, N.C., and
buried in the Tatum Cemetery at Ammon. Married 28
Sept. 1867 Harriet M. Thaggard of Cumberland County.
There must have been other children, but a daughter,
Molly Melvin, who married Benjamin Franklin Tatum,
Esq., is the only one accounted for here. Children:
dau. Hattie Tatum, married Wm. Richard McBride.
son, Chaffin Tatum, lived at Hope Mills in Cumberland
County.
son, Benjamin Tatum
dau. Lenoir Tatum, married G.F. Melvin son of WALTER
MELVIN.
Note: There may have been daughters of ARTHUR, but
their names were not available. Further, there is
listed under ARTHUR MELVIN in the 1860 U.S. Census
L.N.M. Melvin, male, age 10. ARTHUR W. MELVIN, born
c1835, who follows is thought to be a son of ARTHUR
MELVIN (1799) and Charlotte Averitte.
ARTHUR W. MELVIN
(1835- )
Believed to be a son of ARTHUR MELVIN (1799) and Charlotte
Averitte and according to Ruth Cain Roundtree of Lyons,
Georgia whose mother was Vandalia Sewell, this ARTHUR W.
MELVIN married Mary Elizabeth Sewell, born c1832, the dau.
of Sheppard Sewell and Mary Autry, daughter of Theophilus
Autry and Elizabeth Crumpler whose son, Micajah Autry,
went with David Crockett from Tennessee to Texas and died
in the Alamo. Based upon the 1879 U.S. Census of Cumber-
land County, N.C., ARTHUR W. MELVIN and Mary E. Sewell had
the following children:

(1828-1881)

Son of Sen. ROBERT MELVIN (1792-1846) of Bladen County, N.C.,
and Elizabeth Herrington (1793-1871) of Sampson County, N.C.,
daughter of JAMES HERRINGTON and Ann McGehee of Sampson. Ann
McGehee was a daughter of William McGehee, sheriff of Edge-
combe County, N.C., and later member of House of Commons for
Duplin County in 1760. His wife was Ann Moore, daughter of
JOSEPH MOORE and Ann Hodges of Edgecombe County (see HODGES-
MOORE FAMILY. ARTHUR WADE MELVIN was born in Bladen County,
N.C., 24 May 1881, died in Bladen 22 Oct. 1881. Married 26
Feb. 1856 Anastasia FitzRandolph, born in Bladen County 14
Feb. 1842, died in Bladen 1 Feb. 1907. She was a daughter of
