Son of LEON DEXTER MELVIN (1875-1948) and Mae Susan Sykes (1882-1971), daughter of JOHN WESLEY SYKES (1829-1916) and Susan Elizabeth Tatum (1842-1911), daughter of THEOPHILUS TATUM. Born 4 Sept. 1914 in Turnbull Township, Bladen Co., N.C., BYRON married 4 Oct. 1947 Ada Lou Allen of Dublin, N.C., the daughter of Austin Charles Allen and Rebecca Her- sey. He is a farmer by choice and has been elected and ap- pointed to responsible positions in his county and state farm programs. Of the three brothers and one sister who ser- ved in World War II, BYRON served longest. For a long time he belonged to the White House Honor Guard, later transfer- red to combat duty and was on Okinawa when the Japanese sur- rendered. Ada Lou, his wife, was director of the home econo- mics department in the Bladenboro, N.C., Public School, which at one time boasted of being the largest consolidated school in America. Her untimely death on the 26th of Jan. 1977, just short of her teacher's retirement, ended an outstanding career of teacher, wife and mother. Children of BYRON EDWARD MELVIN and Ada Lou Allen: dau. Maureen Carolyn Melvin, born 27 October 1848, married 5 Aug. 1972 David Clarence Keller of Hendersonville, N.C. Maureen is a graduate of U.N.C., Chapel Hill, and is a teacher. dau. Janis Faye Melvin, born 11 March 1950. Married Aug. 15 1970 James Cate Fowler of Richmond, Va., son of a Bap- tist missionary and himself, now, an ordained minister. Janis attended college in Richmond and has now devoted her time to making a home for her husband and child: son, Jeffrey Allen Fowler, born 20 June 1973. son, Byron Edward Melvin, Jr., born 27 October 1951. Married 25 June 1977 Sherry Ruth Nye, daughter of Graham David Nye, Jr., and Mildred Cordes. Byron Edward, Jr., was a graduate of N.C. State University at Raleigh. son, Jean Allen Melvin, born 17 Oct. 1955. CARRIE JANE MELVIN (1877-1955) Robert Alexis (5), David Bunyan (4), Robert (3), Daniel (2), Daniel (1). Daughter of ROBERT ALEXIS MELVIN (1849-1914) and Julia Eliz- abeth Young of Bladen County, N.C. Born 31 July 1877 at White Oak, N.C., died 12 Aug. 1955 at Elizabethtown, N.C. Married Andrew Jackson Jones of Sampson County, N.C., born 9 May 1866, died 2 July 1927 in Elizabethtown, N.C. Children: son, Alexis Jones, married Jane Davis. dau.
