son, Arthur Stephens Smith, born in Bladen County, N.C.,
30 Feb. 1834, died in Bladen 6 Aug. 1912. Married Wil-
lie Ann Mitchell, born 12 Dec, 1849 in Fayetteville,
N.C., the daughter of William Mitchell and Anne Mac-
Donald of Haymount in Fayetteville. Willie Ann Mitchell
died 19 July 1895 and is buried at Cypress Creek Ceme-
tery in Bladen County, N.C. According to my late father,
LEON DEXTER MELVIN (1875-1948), Arthur Stephen Smith
was on the officers staff of Stonewall Jackson and was
the young Lieutenant who caught the general in his arms
when he was shot on horseback. One Civil War history de-
scribes the incident and does say that Lt. Smith took
Gen. Jackson off his horse when he was shot and placed
him on the ground beside the road. Children of Arthur
Stephens Smith and Willie Ann Mitchell:

he was married and had children of whom none sur-
          vived.

N.C., died in 1959. Never married.

son, Arthur Gray Smith, born in Bladen County, died 4

One further note on the Smith family above: Isham Smith, the
husband of CATHERINE MELVIN, is said to be a son of Thomas
Smith of Beaver Dam Community in Cumberland County and that
Isham's first name was John.

HTML Editor's notes:

The line now reading:
"    of John Thomas Melvin, son of Capt. JOHN T. MELVIN and"

Originally read:
"    of JOHN THOMAS MELVIN, son of Capt. JOHN T. MELVIN and"

The HTML Editor can find no head-of-family page for
JOHN THOMAS MELVIN, so the link to John Thomas Melvin points to his mention on page 81 as the son of Capt. JOHN TURNER MELVIN.

Also note that on page 81 John Thomas Melvin was originally typed
as John Turner Melvin, Jr., which also seems to be a mistake
given the evidence on page 66 of the name of the husband of
Mary Viola Melvin.

Variant word list:
Word searches conducted by computer may produce disappointing
results.  Therefore, for each page, there will be a list like
this of names with middle names omitted, maiden names and married
names used, hyphenated words reconstructed, etc.  Perhaps this
strategy will help those people who are conducting searches on
the Internet find who they are looking for on this page.
It has already proven helpful to the HTML Editor.
