MELVIN, II, was a man of good common sense and of a force-
ful nature. Starting out in life with little more than the clo-
thes on his back, he acquired more than three thousand acres of
land, including two or more plantations, and several slaves.
All nine of his children received an education except one, so
far as I have been able to learn and they were highly respected
in their county and community. Children of DANIEL MELVIN, II, and
Sarah West:

son, ROBERT MELVIN, born in Bladen County, N.C., 23 Nov. 1792,
died 11 Aug. 1846 while still in the office of the senate

who enlisted in the Confederate Army in La Fayette Co.,
Tenn. and died at Ft. Fisher in North Carolina, buried
in the Daniel Melvin Cemetery in Bladen.

John Monroe, son of Malcom Monroe of Bladen.
son, GEORGE WASHINGTON MELVIN, born 7 Aug. 1809 in Bladen
County, N.C., died 20 April 1847 while serving in the
office of High Sheriff of Bladen. Married Ann Jane Young,
dau. of David Young. Had one child:
dau. Hannah Jane Melvin, born 12 July 1830, died 10 Dec.
          1911,
married Anders.
dau. Elizabeth Melvin, born c1812 in Bladen County, N.C. Mar-
ried William Young, son of David Young of Bladen County.
son: Robert Melvin Young (mentioned in the will of DANIEL
          MELVIN, II). See YOUNG FAMILY.

Note: When ROBERT MELVIN Sr., made his will of Nov. 15 1844,
he requested that "My body to be interred in the burying
ground at my father's". This was the burial place of DAN-
IEL, II, located in northwest Bladen County on the old
Melvin Stagecoach Road from Fayetteville to Wilmington.
After his widow, Elizabeth, died and was buried at the
ROBERT MELVIN Sr., place, ROBERT's body was moved and
placed in the same cemetery which is now known as the
JOHN S. MELVIN Cemetery. Later all markers were moved to
that site, including that of DANIEL MELVIN, II.

HTML Editor's notes:

The line now reading:
"MELVIN, II, was a man of good common sense and of a force-"

Originally read:
"MELVIN, II, was a man of good common sense and and of a force-"

The repeated word "and" was removed by the HTML Editor.

The line now reading:
"    died 11 Aug. 1846 while still in the office of the senate"

Originally read:
"    died 28 Aug. 1846 while still in the office of the senate"

Senator ROBERT MELVIN died on 11 Aug. 1846 17 days before his
father, DANIEL MELVIN, II who died on 28 Aug. 1846. This may be
the source of the confusion about the date.
This correction is from the HTML Editor.

The line now reading:
"son, GEORGE WASHINGTON MELVIN, born 7 Aug. 1809 in Bladen"

Originally read:
"son, George Washington Melvin, born 20 April 1810 in Bladen"

The text in blue is the HTML Editor's correction because there is
indeed a head-of-family page for this GEORGE WASHINGTON MELVIN.
The text in green is Lionel Melvin's correction, published in
Remember Our Melvins and Kin, Page 349.

The lines now reading:
"    dau. Hannah Jane Melvin, born 12 July 1830, died 10 Dec.
          1911,
married Anders."

Originally read:
"    dau. Hannah Jane Melvin, married Anders."

The text in green is Lionel Melvin's correction, published in
Remember Our Melvins and Kin, Page 349.
The instruction for correcting this line says to remove
"married Anders" and add the birth and death dates.
It is not clear if the marriage to Anders was incorrect,
or if the birth and death dates were supposed to be
pasted over "married Anders" because there would not
be sufficient room on the line for both pieces of information.
The HTML Editor has set "married Anders" in red as being
uncertain. The HTML Editor believes that in the copy he was
typing from, a corrected copy in the posession of
Sandra Melvin, Lionel Melvin's daughter, both the dates AND
the "married Anders" were in the text.

The line now reading:
"    IEL, II, located in northeast Bladen County on the old

Originally read:
"    IEL, II, located in northwest Bladen County on the old"

The HTML Editor believes that northeast is correct, but could be
wrong.

Variant word list:
Word searches conducted by computer may produce disappointing
results.  Therefore, for each page, there will be a list like
this of names with middle names omitted, maiden names and married
names used, hyphenated words reconstructed, etc.  Perhaps this
strategy will help those people who are conducting searches on
the Internet find who they are looking for on this page.
It has already proven helpful to the HTML Editor.
