DANIEL MELVIN III
(1794-1876)

Daniel (2), Daniel (1)

Son of DANIEL MELVIN II and Sarah (Sally) West, evidently a daughter of
James West. Born in Bladen County, N.C., 29 March 1794, died in Sampson Co.,
N.C., 10 Jan. 1876 and buried in the JAMES HERRINGTON Cemetery in Sampson
on the east side of South River. Married c1817 Celia (Cecelia) Herrington,
born in Sampson 13 March 1794, died 5 April 1841, a daughter of JAMES HER-
RINGTON and Elizabeth McGehee who was a daughter of Hon. WILLIAM McGEHEE
and Ann Moore - see MOORE FAMILY. All of the children of DANIEL MELVIN III
were by Celia, although he was married twice after her death. His first re-
marriage was with Rebecca Carver who died 26 June 1862. His last marriage
was with Elizabeth J. Parker nee Fowler, born in Sampson County 19 Aug. 1827.
After DANIEL MELVIN III died in 1876, Elizabeth married Daniel Drew Sikes,
father of Della Dean Sikes who was the wife of JOHNNIE GILMORE MELVIN.
Elizabeth Fowler was connected with the Parker Family which founded Methodism
in Sampson County. Quoting from a letter to me from Katherine Shields Melvin:
" Her mother, Rachel Parker - b. Jl. 9, 1803, died in Oct. 1873, was daughter
of William Parker who married Nancy Owen - William was a son of John Parker
who lived around 1738 & who married Rachel Sessoms. He began Methodist services
in his home, where Bishop Asbury is supposed to have preached - Later, he gave
the land for Parker's Meeting House, which is now Andrew's Chapel, the mother
church of Methodism in Sampson County - "  Elizabeth was 62 years of age when
she married DANIEL MELVIN III the 29th day of March, 1865, too old to give
him children. She is buried in the cemetery of the Salemburg Baptist Church
beside her last husband, Daniel Drew Sikes. On the other side is buried Appy
Eliza Lewis, first wife of Daniel Drew Sikes, who was the mother of Della
Dean Sikes. DANIEL MELVIN III served in the War of 1812. Like his predecessors,
he was a planter and lived off the land. Children of DANIEL MELVIN III and
