Son of Sen. ROBERT MELVIN (1792-1846) and Elizabeth Herring-
ton of Bladen County, N.C. See HERRINGTON family. Born 15
July 1819 in Turnbull Township, Bladen County, died 24 May
1907 at White Oak, Bladen County, N.C., and buried in the
David B. Melvin Cemetery across the road from his home in
White Oak Township, Bladen County. Married 28 Feb. 1844 An-
nie Jane Davis, born 14 Aug. 1827, died 14 Jan. 1914 in White
Oak, N.C., the daughter of William Davis and Phoebe Banner-
man of Bladen. See Davis-Bannerman-DeVane families. Before
the Civil War DAVID BUNYAN MELVIN would have been classified
as a planter, but after the slaves were gone, farmer was more
apt the title; however the freeing of the slaves did not re-
lieve him of caring for them and their needs. Thus as ex-
slaves they were still very much a part of the farming op-
eration, and they looked to their old master for support in
one form or another. Their liberators did nothing for them.

     Cemetery.

     1847, died in White Oak 17 Feb. 1906. Married Rebecca
     Young.
son, ROBERT ALEXIS MELVIN, born in White Oak, N.C., 22 Feb.
     1849, died in White Oak 31 Dec. 1914. Married Julia Eliz-
     abeth Young.
dau. PHOEBE MELVIN, born 6 Feb. 1851 in White Oak, N.C.,
     died in White Oak 30 June 1915. Married Thomas B. Dun-
     ham.
son, CHARLES THOMAS MELVIN, born 12 Dec. 1852 in White Oak,
     N.C., died at White Oak Aug. 1930. Married Alice Dunham.
son, David Leslie Melvin, born 27 Nov. 1 54 in White Oak,
     N.C., died 30 April 1914. Never married.
dau. MARY ELVIRA MELVIN, born in White Oak, N.C., 26 Dec.
     1856, died in White Oak 11 Feb. 1913. Married James
     Young.
