Son of LEON DEXTER MELVIN (1875-1948) and Mae Susan Sykes,
daughter of JOHN WESLEY SYKES and Susan Elizabeth Tatum of
Bladen County, N.C. Born 15 Dec. 1910 in Turnbull Township
of Bladen County and settled in the county seat of Eliza-
bethtown. Married 6 May 1939 Jewel Cain, the daughter of
Arcascus Bert Cain and Lillian Marshall Tatum of White Oak,
Bladen County, N.C. Like his brothers, WILTON, BYRON and
JEAN, EARL is a hunter, but as are they, he is a conserva-
tionist. Earl is interested in the welfare of his town and
among other things was involved in founding a voluntary
fire department, having served as fire chief in its early
beginning. He, also, made an unsuccessful bid for the N.C.
House of The General Assembly in the Democratic primary. At
the present time, he operates the Melvin Feed Store in Eliz-
abethtown after having operated other businesses there. His
wife, Jewell, was for many years a beautician in the same
