Daughter of Hon. LEON DEXTER MELVIN (1875-1948) and Mae Susan
Sykes, daughter of JOHN WESLEY SYKES and Susan Elizabeth Tat-
um of Bladen County, N.C. Born 23 April 1916 in Turnbull Town-
ship, Bladen County, N.C. Graduated from White Oak High School
in Bladen County and took her training as a nurse at St. Eliz-
abeth Hospital, Richmond, Va., and Johns Hopkins Hospital in
Baltimore, Md., graduating as a Registered Nurse. EDNA has fol-
lowed her chosen profession in several hospitals in Richmond,
Virginia, and Raleigh, N.C. Married 29 March 1941 in the home
of her parents Lt. Guy Crumley Sheppard of Richmond, Virginia,
son of John Morgan Sheppard and Ella Bowen of Orangeburg, S.C.
Guy's paternal grandparents were L. Calvin and Anna Sheppard;
maternal grandparents, Georgian Sheppard and Amazia Bowen of
Cordell, Georgia. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and served with the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the
Pacific in World War II as a First Sgt., receiving the Commis-
sion of Sec. Lt. after receiving wounds on Okinawa. Children
of EDNA MAE MELVIN and Guy Crumley Sheppard:
 
dau. Susan Elizabeth Sheppard, born 14 March 1947 in Richmond,
     Virginia. Married Charles Anthony Smith, Jr., of Rich-
     mond, Va., son of Charles Anthony Smith, Sr., and Marie
     Anntonette Holzgrete (1906-1970) of Richmond. Further,
     Charles Sylvester Smith was the son of Johann Schmidt of
     Kehl, Germany, and Marie of Bamberg who migrated to Pat-
     terson, N.J. Marie Anntonette Holzgrete (1906-1970) was
     the daughter of William Frank Holzgrete (1882-1918) and
     Anette Rosalia Shepers (1876-1941) of Richmond, Va. An-
     nette Rosalia Shepers was the daughter of Joseph Shepers
     (born 1825) and Marie Anne Hardewig (1837-1903), both of
     Richmond. Children of Susan Melvin Sheppard and Charles
     Anthony Smith, Jr.:

     Va. Married 17 Oct. 1970 Susan Fleming Franklin, dau. of
     James Truman Franklin and Mildred Sawyer of Elizabeth
     City, N.C. James Truman Franklin's father was Alfred Benj.
     Franklin and his mother was Isabella Badenoch who came
     to America at the age of four about the time of the "po-
     tato famine" in Ireland from Badenoch District of Inver-
     ness-Shire, Scotland, in that southern portion bounded
     on the north by the Monadhliath Mts., on the east by the
     Cairngorms and Braemar, on the south by Atholl and Gram-
     pians and on the west by Lochaber. Mildred Sawyer's par-
     ents were Thomas Sawyer and Nancy Brown of Elizabeth
     City, N.C. Children of Guy Crumley Sheppard, Jr., and
