Daughter of JOHN STEPHEN MELVIN (1835-1902) and Sarah Jane
McKay, daughter of JOHN A. McKAY of Bladen County, N.C. Born
in Turnbull Township, Bladen County, at the old ROBERT MELVIN
home place 20 April 1882, died in Ohio 23 Feb. 1968 and Bur-
ied in Cross Creek Cemetery, Fayetteville, N.C., beside the
grave of her husband and in the burial plot where her son,
Erwin was buried. MAUDE was one of the early people who real-
ized that learning has no age limits. After her only living
child, John T., finished medical school and she had long been
a widow, she entered the University of South Carolina and
took her A.B. degree, followed up by courses over a period
of time in other universities. On the 23rd of October 1906,
MAUDE MELVIN married Wm. Thomas Martin of Cumberland County
and they had the following children:

     etteville, N.C. Married 25 May 1932 Myra Josephine Rav-
     enzah, born 27 Dec. 1906 in Reading, Penn., the daugh-
     ter of Samuel Henry Ravenzah and Katie Alice Boyer of
     Reading. John T. received his education in the city
     schools of Florence, S.C., Furman University and the
     Medical School of Temple University. He served with the
     U.S. Air Force in the European theater during World
     War II and retired from service some time after the
