        Son of Sheriff JAMES MELVIN (1797-1881) of Bladen County,
        N.C., and Miriam Simmons. Born in Bladen County in 1830. Mar-
        ried 7 July 1853 Margaret M. Beard, sister of Eliza Beard who
        married Rev. WILLIAM SIMMONS MELVIN, daughters of John and
        Elizabeth Beard. Children of ISAAC MELVIN and Margaret M.

        Son of ARTHUR MELVIN and his first wife, Annie Jane Jessup,
        daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Ann Jessup of Cumberland and
        Bladen Counties, N.C. The will of Isaac Jessup dated 30 March
        1852 and recorded in Bladen County leaves the property "now
        in the possession of ARTHUR MELVIN" to his grandsons, WILLIAM
        H. MELVIN and ISAAC C. MELVIN. ISAAC's marriage bond was
        recorded in Cumberland County, N.C., 1 Jan. 1847. He married
        about that time Susan T. Hollingsworth of Bladen County, the
        daughter of Stephen and Mary Hollingsworth whose will was
        dated 5 Sept. 1840 naming Wife: Mary. Sons: Alexandrea;
        Augustus. Daughters: Rebecca J.; Susan T.; Mary Margaret;
        Isabella. Executors: ROBERT MELVIN; George T. Barksdale.
        Witnesses: ARTHUR MELVIN; James Thagard. He specifies that
        his South River Mills be repaired. Children of ISAAC MELVIN
        and SUSAN T. HOLLINGSWORTH:
