Sheriff JAMES MELVIN (1797-1881) John (2), Daniel (1). Son of JOHN MELVIN (1762-1853) and Keziah Suggs of Bladen County, N.C. Born 15 Feb. 1797 in Bladen County, died 4 Feb. 1881 in Bladen and buried in the family cemetery one mile south of White Oak in the same county. Married Mariam Simmons c1822, born 4 March 1804, died 27 Nov. 1881 in the same year as her husband and buried beside him. JAMES, son of JOHN and GEO. WASHINGTON, son of DANIEL, II, were the two grandsons of DAN- IEL MELVIN, Immigrant, who became High Sheriffs of Bladen. A greatgrandson, ROBERT PHILLIP, son of ROBERT, was the Civil War Sheriff of Bladen County. If for no other reason, JAMES MELVIN should be remembered for siring Bladen County's most famous and eccentric Baptist preacher, the Rev. WILLIAM SIM- MONS MELVIN.
