JANE MELVIN
(c1748-1836)

Daughter of DANIEL MELVIN, I (Immigrant), and Jane Thomas
of Bladen County, N.C. Born c1748 in Bladen County or in one
of the western counties of North Carolina, died in 1836 at
the home of her sister Susanna and her husband, Christopher
Sutton, buried at Reeves' Store about two miles southeast of
Ammon, Bladen County. Married Edward Reeves, born 1721 and
granted 27 Sept. 1751 100 acres of land in Bladen near the
100 acre tract granted to DANIEL MELVIN, I, one year later.
Edward Reeves died in 1826 at the age of 105. Some of the
family say that he came from Brandywine Creek, Chester Co.,
Pennsylvania, however, conflicting accounts say that he came
from Tar River in North Carolina, from Wales, England. To
have settled in a wilderness, Edward and JANE did well in
educating their children. In my possession there are several
notes and receipts signed by, and in many cases written by,
their sons in well worded context and in neat sure handwrit-
ing. Children of JANE MELVIN and Edward Reeves:

son, Jeremiah Prothera Reeves, born 1769, died on his own
land near White Lake, Bladen County, N.C., in 1846.
Married c1791 his first cousin, Nancy Russ, dau. of
Ann (Nancy) Melvin and Eleaser Russ. A brother of Nancy
Russ Reeves, Eleaser Russ, Jr., showed up in the 1830
     census of Marion County, Ga.
son, William Reeves, 1771?, died 1855 in Bladen County, N.C.
Married, first, Lois Bevan, second, a Miss Jordan.
dau. Nancy Reeves, born 1772, died 1857, Washington County,
     Tenn. Married James Cassady.
son, Robert Reeves, born 1774?, died 1836 in Bladen County,
N.C. Married, first, Rachael Thomas; second, Jennie Mel-
vin. Of Robert Reeves' children only one can be accoun-
     ted for here:
son, Edward Reeves, born 16 Aug. 1799 in Bladen, died
20 Nov. 1854 in Vicksburg, Miss. Married in 1825
Nancy Melvin, daughter of JOHN MELVIN and Mary Tur-
ner of Bladen County, N.C. Children:
son, David Melvin Reeves, died 26 April 1849 in
               Bladen County.
son, James T. Reeves, born 12 July 1836 in Bladen
               County, married 1868 Saburnia Houston.

HTML Editor's notes:

The line now reading:
"Lane of Idalou, Texas, born 4 May 1928. No child-"

Originally read:
"Lane of Ida Lou, Texas, born 4 May 1928. No child-"

(There is no Ida Lou, Texas listed in the on-line dictionary,
but there is an Idalou, Texas. -Ed.
)

The spelling of Rochell or Rochelle is inconsistent.

The spelling of Rachael is unusual.
