Son of DANIEL MELVIN, II, and Sarah West, daughter of James West. Born in Bladen County, N.C., 1799, died 25 July 1844. Married c1819 Sarah Ann Kelly, thought to have been a daugh- ter of Patrick Kelly, but the 1810 Census renders this view to be untenable, for he was not married at that time.* The Kel- lys who did have girls in her age limits in the 1810 Census were W.D., John, Archibald and James. Sarah Ann married Wil- liam Herrington, son of JAMES HERRINGTON. JOHN MELVIN was a magistrate in Bladen County, and served in the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions.
