Sara S. Melvin, born 1842. JOHN ALEXANDER MELVIN (1883-1948) John Stephen (4), Robert (3), Daniel (2), Daniel (1). Son of JOHN STEPHEN MELVIN (1835-1902) and Sarah Jane Mc- Kay of Turnbull Township in Bladen County N.C. Born in Bladen 1 Aug. 1883, died 11 December 1948 in Fayetteville, N.C., and buried in the Melvin Cemetery at the old ROBERT MELVIN place on Little Turnbull. Married c1911 Stella Blanche Hilburn of Carvers Creek Community, Bladen County, the dau. of Singletary Hester Hilburn and Frances Porter. JOHN ALEX- ANDER MELVIN, "Sandy", as he was known, was a successful farmer, often operating three or more of his farms at the same time. He was, also, a leader in his church, community, county and state, often serving on agriculture boards of di- rectors and as did his brothers, JOHN STEPHEN and LEON DEX- TER, he served for a while on the County Board of Education. Those who knew him admired him for his forthrightness and genuine concern for others. His pastime, was hunting, espe- cially quail shooting and deer driving. On one hunt he shot a buck and unknowingly killed with the same shot two other deer. He was always ready to help a neighbor in need. son, John Alexander Melvin, Jr., born in Bladen County 31 July 1915, died in Fayetteville, N.C., 19 October 1969, buried at LaFayette Memorial Cemetery in Fayetteville, N.C. dau. Betty Sue Melvin. son, Jack Arthur Melvin. dau. Sarah Frances Melvin, born in Bladen 29 November 1917, died 4 March 1965 in Baltimore, Maryland, buried in the Melvin Cemetery with her parents. Married Rodney G. Holmes. No issue. son, Infant, stillborn in the influenza epidemic of 1918. dau. Helen Herrington Melvin, born 10 Aug. 1921 in Bladen County, N.C. Married Norbert H. Linder and lives in Darby, Pa. One child: son, Stephen H. Linder. son, Sherwood Harry Melvin, born in Bladen County, N.C., 28 Sept. 1923. Married 23 June 1951 Doris Ruth Coble, dau. of Charles Coble and Florabell Melvin who was a daughter of JAMES GILBERT MELVIN and Hettie Clyde Melvin. dau.
