                      USE OF THIS BOOK

Heads of the family are in alphabetical order, with a few ex-
ceptions, and for simplicity in tracing ancestry, the female
sometimes is given as head of the family.

ROBERT MELVIN  (head of family)
(1792-1846)  (dates of birth and death) A "c" before date would
             mean date was estimated.

Son of       (parents of the head of the family are listed) If
the parent appears in CAPITAL LETTERS, the parent
will appear as head of the family.

Born         (dates and place of birth and death of the head
             of the family)

Married      (whom the head of the family married) His or her
parents, if known, will be listed also. If the
name of his of her parent appears in CAPITAL LET-
TERS, the parent will appear as head of the family,
1st or first marriage; 2nd or second marriage, etc.

Children:

son,         (a child of the head of the family) A child of this
son (or daughter) will be indented to: Children:

dau. (a child of the above and grandchild of the
head of the family) A child of this child will
                  be indented to:

son, (Each generation will be indented.) In
this case the child is a great grand-
                       child.

After the name of the head of the family the dates of the year
of birth and death may be shown in parentheses below the name, the
names of the ancestors will often be cited, followed by the num-
eral in parentheses indicating that ancestor's generation as:

Daniel (2), Daniel (1)

A name appearing in CAPITAL LETTERS will mean that person will
appear as head of a family. Look up that person, found in alpha-
betical order, surname first, then given name.

Ancestors may be traced backwards in this book, descendants for-
ward. For ancestors the parent of the head of the family can be
used; for descendants the child of the head of the family.
