     HELEN THERESA (NEE MATAY), 75, died on November 21, 2002. She was born in Throop, PA, lived in Union, NJ before moving to Apex, NC in 1986. She worked as an operator for Bell Telephone in East Orange, NJ for 37 years before retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
     Beloved wife of the late Edward, devoted mother of Carol and the late Edward Jr., loving grandmother of Lea-Ann, and Stacey, dear sister of Agnes Tarlecki, Mary Gephart and the late Kay Todloski, George, Frank, and Joseph Matay.

     MRS. RUTH GENSINGER MEREDITH, 77, of 5233 Johnson Pond Road, died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2002, at her residence after two months of failing health. Born in New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late August Fredrick and Christine Teller Fredrick. She was a retired bookkeeper and homemaker.
     Survivors include her husband, Charles Meredith of the home; sons, John Gensinger of Raleigh, Paul Gensinger and his wife, Ellen of Burlington and Alan Gensinger of North Myrtle Beach, SC; a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Ryan and her husband, Ray of Wilmington; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
     She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, John G. Gensinger.
     A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, November 30th at the Cary Funeral Home Chapel, 3700 Cary Pkwy, NW. The family will receive relatives and friends immediately following the service.

GARNER
     LINDA MARVARINE PHILLIPS, 60, died Tuesday in WakeMed of Raleigh. Born October 16, 1942 in Durham County to the late Walton T. and Betsy Johnson Phillips. She was a member of the Baptist Center Church in Clayton. She worked for many years as a nurse anesthetist in Presbyterian Hospital and Duke Medical Center.
     A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday in the Mausoleum at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Clayton.
     Surviving: sister, Myrtle Ann Raynor and husband, Danford of Raleigh; brother, Rex Phillips and wife, Gale of Newport News, VA; nieces and nephews, Rachel Anthony and husband, Mark of Virginia Beach, VA, William Phillips and wife, Jinny of Newport News, VA, Michelle Haswell and husband, Phil of Knightdale, Dan Raynor Jr. and wife, Tami of Baden Lake; greatnieces, Madalynn Raynor and Elizabeth Haswell.

     SIBYL CAUSEY LEGGETT, 73, of 115 Country Club Drive, Henderson, NC, died Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at her home.
     Born in Lois, SC, she was the daughter of the late Needham Jeremiah and Ethel Strickland Causey. She was the widow of Robert Alexander Leggett Jr. of the Leggett Stores.
     Mrs. Leggett was a graduate of Columbia College in Columbia, SC, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and a minor in Voice. Prior to moving to Henderson, she was a teacher and guidance counselor in the Columbia School System. She retired after teaching at Kerr Vance Academy.
     Mrs. Leggett was active in community affairs in Henderson, having been on the United Way Board of Directors, chairman of the Cancer Crusade, a member of the Heart Association, founder and VicePresident of the Community Concert Association, Vice-Chairman of the Endowment Board at Vance Granville Community College, a member and past President of Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teacher's society, a member of the Sorosis Literary Club, a member of the Board of the Vance County Red Cross, and a member of the Embassy Cultural Center Foundation Steering Committee. She was a member of the Board of Visitors for Columbia College and received the coveted Columbia College Medallion, and also served as a Trustee of Louisburg College.
     Active in summer productions of the Henderson Players, she performed in "Annie Get Your Gun, " "Oklahoma, " and other musicals. She was a member of "The Local Vocals, " a singing group who performed in Henderson and the surrounding area for several years. She was active in the Miss Henderson Pageant Association, serving as Business Manager for several Queens.
     She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the Chancel Choir. She was Chairman of the Staff Parish Committee, a Trustee, and a teacher for the Fellowship and Christine Jenkins Sunday School Classes. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and was honored by this group with a Mission Pin.
     Funeral services will be held Friday, at 11:00 a.m., in First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles M. Cook. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
     Surviving are three daughters, Gloria Dawn Anderson and partner, Bridget Sciales of New Rochelle, NY, Deborah Leggett Wesslen of Monroe, NC, Catherine Victoria Anderson Odham and husband, Benny of Raleigh, NC; two sons, Ervin Quitman Anderson Jr. and partner, J. Cook of Washington, DC and Robert Alexander Leggett III and wife, Amy of Cary, NC; three sisters, Wanda Umlauf, and husband, John of Richmond, VA, Betty Jo Goff and husband, Wilson of Lexington, VA, and Glenda Vaught and husband Paul of Canton, GA; and five grandchildren, Claire Leggett, Meredith Leggett, Caroline Leggett, Ryan Scott Wesslen and Donna Catherine Wesslen.
     She was preceded in death by a grandson, Staffan Torsten Wesslen.
     The family will receive friends today from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Flowers Funeral Home, and at the home immediately following the funeral service.

     Kiva was born April 10, 1905. Her parents were Joseph Russell Powell and Katie Rebecca Hines Powell. She was married to the late James Bertie Murray, Sr.
     She is survived by a daughter, Bertie M. Brantley; five grandchildren, Lynn Best and friend Mel Rance, Dr. Jenny Brantley and husband Dr. Brian Fitch, Joy Hayes and husband Ronnie Hayes, Beau Brantley and wife Nikki, and Ben Brantley. She is also survived by one stepdaughter, Doris Smith.
     She was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul Powell, John Lee Powell, Garland Powell and William Powell; and four sisters, Mary Edwards, Eleanor Edwards, Gaynell Edwards and Annie Laurie Holmes.
     She will be remembered for the strength of her faith, the generosity of her spirit, and the warmth of her love. Kiva's home and heart were always open and filled with love.

     LOUISE S. "WEEZIE" SANFORD, 102, of Raleigh died Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at Rex Convalescent Care Center. Louise was a native of Wilmington, NC the daughter of the late Capt. John Sterling Singletary and Menola Hewett Singletary. She retired in 1963 from the U.S. Postal Service after more than 20 years of service. Louise was a charter member of Windemere Presbyterian Church in Wilmington.
     She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister, and friend to many. She will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved her especially her family.
     Louise was preceded in death by her husband Tebe DeWitt Sanford in 1945, her son, Tebe DeWitt Sanford, Jr. in 1944 and her granddaughter, Marcia Alderman. On Wednesday, November 27, 2002 Louise's beloved sister, Anna Florence Schulken died in Wilmington, one day after her sister.
     Surviving are her daughter, Menola Alderman and her husband Edward of Raleigh; two grandsons, Dr. E. M. Alderman, Jr. and his wife, Annette of Framingham, MA and Donald S. Alderman and his wife, Sheila of Raleigh; three great-grandchildren, Lauren, Marshall, and Eddie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
     The family will receive friends Friday, November 29, 2002 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 E. Millbrook Rd, 876-6900.

     ON MONDAY, November 25, 2002, Sharmaine Skinner of Raleigh went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was a long time employee of the N.C. Farm Bureau and a proud member of Christ Covenant Church. Her faith and her family were both a very important part of her life.
     She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Minnie Rice of Harrisburg, IL.
     Ms. Skinner is survived by five children; daughter Cheryl Markus and spouse, Raymond of Ohio; son, Keith Pyle and spouse Tricia of Illinois; daughters Renee Casey and spouse Rick of Illinois, Melissa Schleede and spouse Jim of Indiana and Tiffany Dunn of North Carolina; two sisters, Regina Arensman and spouse Bill of Raleigh, Sandi Bonnette and spouse, Ron of W. Palm Beach, FL. Ms. Skinner is also survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

     EUGENE BROWN, 74, went to be with the Lord on November 26, 2002, II Corinthians 5:8.
     Mr. Brown was born on November 13, 1928 to the late William and Laura Brown of Tarboro.
     He was a warm and gentle man, a man of integrity, honesty and loyalty. A devoted husband and father, caring brother and loyal friend, he had a great love for his home, the outdoors and nature. Mr. Brown had a kind spirit, not only in the way he treated people, but the way he treated animals.
     Eugene was a carpenter by trade and helped build the Trinity Baptist Church, of which he was a member.
     One of his dearest friends was his beloved pastor and mentor, Mark Palmer. He cared very deeply for all of his church family.
     Funeral service Saturday, 2:00 p.m., at the Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Palmer officiating. Burial in Edgecombe Memorial Park.
     Survivors include his beloved wife, Sue of 32 years. His much beloved children: daughters, Myrtle Christine Whitehurst and husband, Ralph Jr., and Debra Jean Lassiter and husband, Kenny, all of Tarboro; step-children, Johnny Thompson and wife, Janice of Tarboro, Teresa Strehle and husband, Frank, of Raleigh and Carolyn Braddy of Morehead City; brothers, Herbert Brown of Tarboro and L. Doc Brown of Rocky Mount; sisters, Margaret Adkins and Myrtle Collison, both of Tarboro, Lorraine Barnes of Atlantic Beach; grandchildren, Renee Whitehurst Owens of Crisp, NC, Kevin West and Gina Brown, both of Tarboro; great-grandchildren, Trey and Sara Grace West, both of Tarboro; step-grandchildren, Brent Kennedy, Melanie Holt, Jennifer Strehle and Michael Braddy, all of Raleigh, Johnny Thompson III and Jamie Turner, both of Tarboro; step great-grandchild, Benjamin Turner of Tarboro.

     JOSEPH "RANDY" RANDALL WILLIAMS, 53, of 225 W. Third St., died Tuesday at WakeMed.
     Graveside funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
     He is survived by his wife, Debbie Winstead; daughters, Carrie Elizabeth Williams of Raleigh, Ereka Lynn Winstead of the home; stepdaughter, Tamatha Jean Winstead of Asheville; mother, Gertrude "Trude" H. Williams of Princeton; sister, Diane W. Langston of Princeton; grandchildren, Malik Isaiah Murphy, Brittany Winstead and Kemp Moore.
     He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Jenkins Williams, and a brother, Arthur Eugene Williams.
     The family will receive friends 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Strickland Funeral Home, 211 W. Third St., Wendell; other times at the home.
