     MARIE K. LOOSMAN, 65, of 1221 Shackleton Rd., Apex, died Sunday evening at Western Wake Medical Center in Cary. She was a native of Philadelphia, PA.

     She is survived by her husband, Donald A. Loosman of the home; two daughters, Debbie West of Columbia, SC and Kathy Arthurs of Cary; a son, Donald K. Loosman of Cary; five grandchildren; two sisters and a brother.

     WILLIAM ALLEN BERNSTEIN, 63, of 201 Haley House Ln., Cary, died Sunday. Mr. Bernstein was born in Brooklyn, NY on March 7, 1939 to the late Joseph Bernstein and Clara Barron Bernstein. He was a computer programmer with IBM for 37 years before his retirement.
     Mr. Bernstein is survived by his wife, Priscilla Gill Bernstein of Cary; two daughters, Beth Courtney and her husband, John of Raleigh and Marci Russell and her husband, Michael of Cary; two grandchildren, Matthew and Mia Russell.
     Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery.

     MR. LLEWELYN A. EDWARDS, 73, passed away Thursday, November 21, 2002. He was born in Oneida County, New York, on March 26, 1929, to Llewelyn and Lydia Edwards. He moved to Cary in 1986 coming from Hartford, NY. Mr. Edwards was a veteran of WWII having served in the US Marine Corps and was a member of the Blind Veterans Association. He had worked for the UNIVAC Corp. in Utica.
     Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife of 53 years, Adele N. Edwards; son, Llewelyn A. Edwards, Jr. of Florida; daughters, Cheryl A. Webb of Hawaii and Sandra E. Seth and her husband Dale of New York; brother, Richard Edwards and his wife Lydia of Cary; sister, Gloria Case and her husband Ed of Cary; seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild; sister-in-law, Rita Edwards of New Hartford, NY
     She was preceded in death by her brother, Arnold Edwards.
     A Memorial Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Apex with Fr. David Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Utica, New York.

     KENNETH ARNOLD FOWLER, 38, passed away with his family by his side, Sunday, November 24, 2002. A Funeral Mass will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 27th at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Rd, Cary. Ken was born in Riner, VA and was a graduate of Auburn High School in Riner, VA. He also graduated with a business and marketing degree from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Ken had an entrepreneurial spirit and was involved in radio advertising, owning a limousine service, Interactive Concierge and recently Citysearch.com.
     He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Nelson Price and Ethel Bessie Mabry Fowler; Claude Willis and Ollie Mae Peak Dalton.
     He is survived by his wife, Suguna Kothapalli Fowler of Cary; children, Sean Kenneth and Malli Kothapalli Fowler, both of the home; parents, Arnold Nelson and Mary Frances Fowler, of Riner, VA;in-laws, Dr. Rao and Lakshmi Kothapalli of Siler City, NC; sisters, Donna Wadsworth and husband, Lin of Tappahannock, VA; Brenda Light of Christiansburg, VA; Joyce Black and husband, Steve of Radford, VA; Carol White and husband, Roger of Dublin, VA, Rebecca Partin and husband, Steven of Radford, VA, Mary Hughes and husband, David of Radford, VA; brother-in-law, Mark Kothapalli of Cary; sister-in-law, Radhika Kothapalli of Cary; four nephews; five nieces; many other relatives and friends.

CHARLOTTE
     JOHN THOMAS MORRISEY, Sr., of Charlotte, died Monday, November 25, 2002 at Sunrise on Providence.
     He was a native of Lynn, MA and was a World War II veteran. Mr. Morrisey received his undergraduate and law degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He enjoyed a long career in municipal law.
     Left to cherish his memory are his children, Byon Morrisey of Louisiana, Beth Early of Charlotte and Barbara Yow of Lake Ridge, VA; sons-in-law, Joe Early and Mark Yow; treasured grandchildren, Jay and Jeremy Early and Wil and Kate Yow; brothers, Paul and family of Peabody, MA and Jim and family of Pinehurst, N.C. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, John Thomas, Jr.
     The family is most grateful to the staff of Sunrise on Providence and to Dr. Danny Honeycutt and his staff at Senior Health Connection for their compassionate guidance.

MOUNT OLIVE
     JOHN M. GOODSON, 93, a native of the Garners Chapel community in Duplin County, died Sunday afternoon at home. He graduated from Warsaw High School and then attended the University of North Carolina until his fathers death, which necessitated his return to the farm. He was a charter member of Garners Chapel Baptist Church and served as deacon for many years. He had a keen interest in sports and politics and served on the Duplin County School Board. A prominent farmer of the area, he practiced diversified farming. Interest in the strawberry industry led him to become a certified plant grower. He received the North Carolina Strawberry Association Award in 1996.
     Preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Wells Goodson, he is survived by a daughter, Betty Goodson Sutton of Cary; three sons, Dr. Phil Goodson of Raleigh, Michael Goodson of Skillman, NJ, Robert Goodson of Goldsboro; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
     Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Tyndall Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.
     Visitation will be on Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times at the residence, 496 White Flash Rd., Mount Olive.

     LOIS WEBLEY WOOLSEY, 73, formerly of Quincy, MA and Sewickley, PA, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002.
     During her career Mrs. Woolsey was a legal assistant for many years. Later in life she worked at the Protestant Social Service Bureau in Quincy, MA. Mrs. Woolsey was a beloved wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. As well as spending time with her family, she also enjoyed oil painting. She was a faithful member of the Episcopal Church and most recently attended The Prince of Peace of Episcopal Church in Apex.
     A funeral and Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002 at 11 AM at The Prince of Peace Episcopal Church in Apex.
     The family will receive friends from 9:45 to 10:45 prior to the service at the church.
     Mrs. Woolsey is survived by her husband, William Henry Woolsey; daughters, Rev. Leanne Calhoun and her husband, Rev. Tony Calhoun of Newport, NC; and Evelyn Burger and her husband, Christopher of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren, William Calhoun; and Rebekah Calhoun, both of Newport; and Jacob, and Ian Burger, both of Fort Wayne, IN; sister-in-law, Dorothy Webley of Hoffman Estates, IL.

     WILEY TRUETT BROOKS, 73, of 3100 Shadwell Court, died Saturday.
     Mr. Brooks was born in Charlotte on February 14, 1929 to the late James Wiley Brooks and Ola Melton Brooks. Wiley assisted his father, a contractor of residential construction, following his father's retirement; Wiley contracted on his own.
     In 1962, he moved his family to DeLand, FL. In 1968, because of the construction boom in Raleigh, as well as the educational opportunities for his family, he brought them to Raleigh, where he continued contracting in residential construction. Following an early retirement because of ill health, he was an avid participant in the television ministry of Hayes Barton Baptist Church. Wiley had a wide circle of friends who met for coffee and conversation daily. Fondly referred to as "THE COFFEE CLUB" membership varied by the hour and/or location. He was politically astute and read three newspapers a day plus anything related to the automotive industry. Wiley was supportive of friends and was intuitive in recognizing a need in others.
     Wiley is survived by his wife JoAnne White Brooks of Raleigh; two sons, Wiley T. Brooks Jr. of Columbia, MD; and James D. Brooks of Franklinton, NC; two daughters, Leslie Joan Brooks of Austin, TX; and Susan Diane Hogan of Tampa, FL; two sisters, Martha Giles of High Point; and Amy Brooks of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, David Guthrie; Erin Brooks; and Evan Brooks.

     L. BYRON BURNEY, 94, born December 19, 1907, departed this life on November 24, 2002. Born and raised in Lumberton, NC, he was the son of William Moody Burney and Annie Burney. He was married to the late Montie Gray Farmer of Wilson, NC in 1938.
     Mr. Burney attended N.C. State College and graduated in 1929 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He also attended Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, PA in 1930-31. During WWII, he was employed as draftsman at the Norfolk Navy yard. After that time, he was employed by several architectural firms in Raleigh, NC.
     A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in Maplewood Cemetery, 400 College St., Wilson, NC 27893. For those desiring directions to the cemetery, please meet at Joyner's Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

     MARIA MAGDALENA HARDER SINGER, voice teacher, wife, mother and grandmother, died November 23, 2002. She was 82. Born December 29, 1919 in Berlin, Germany, Maria was a singer from the age of five. Always resilient in spirit, she performed in concerts and operas despite the conditions of World War II and its aftermath. Maria met her future husband, John Juergen when he was an engineering student in 1940. They were married in 1947 and emigrated to the United States, becoming citizens in 1954. Maria continued her career in the United States, performing as a soprano soloist and teaching voice lessons privately. In 1960, Dr. and Mrs. Harder moved to Raleigh, where he became a professor of industrial engineering at North Carolina State University. Mrs. Harder was active in the arts of her community; she sang with the Raleigh Oratorio Society, where she also served a term as president, was a board member of the Friends of the College concert series at N.C. State University, and adjudicated competitions for the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
     Mrs. Harder is survived by her two daughters, Stephanie Harder Rogister of Raleigh and Georgia Harder-Faigle of Bonn, Germany and four grandchildren: Evan Thomas Rogister of New York City, John Colin Rogister of Chapel Hill, Christoph Lindsey Faigle of Bonn, Germany and Gesine Elisabeth Faigle of Bonn, Germany.
     A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2002 at Jones Chapel at Meredith College.

     MRS. MILDRED NORVEL DANIEL, age 86, of 815 W. Second St., Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, November 24, 2002, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
     She was born in Northampton County and was the daughter of the late William T. Norvel and Ilene Edwards Norvel. Mrs. Daniel received her Bachelor of Science Degree from William and Mary College, and attended Meredith College. She was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church and the Inabelle Coleman Lifestyle Group of the Church. Mrs. Daniel was formerly very active in the PTA where she was a former President. She served as a former president of The Dental Auxillary of North Carolina, and was very active in Community affairs.
     Mrs. Daniel was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Michelle Thomas.
     Mrs. Daniel is survived by her husband of 69 years, Dr. R.A. Daniel, Jr. who practiced Dentistry in the Roanoke Rapids area for 47 years; a son, Don Daniel and his wife, Ruth of Knoxville, TN; two daughters, Sandy Thomas and her husband, Joe of Dunn, NC, Barbara Bunch of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; seven grandchildren; and ten greatgrandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren.

     Vester was born June 13, 1925 in Nash County, the son of the late Ollie Augusta and Nelia Green Harris.
     Vester was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. He attended Atlantic Christian College and began his sales career with Efirds Department Store. He retired from Sears in Rocky Mount with over 30 years of service to the company. Vester holds a life membership with Optimist International and he was a member of the Breakfast Optimist for 32 years.
     Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Barbara Harris of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Ray Harris and Anna Averett Harris; grandson, William Thomas Harris; granddaughter, Eleanor Gregory Harris, all of Wilmington, N.C.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Linwood and Myrtle Harris of Chase City, Virginia, Sanford and Betsy Harris of Rocky Mount; sisters and brothersin-law, Louise and John Vick of Rocky Mount, Barbara and John Denton of Rocky Mount, and Mildred and Willie Brown of Enfield.

     RAYMOND JOHNSON WORKS, Jr., 81, died Monday, November 25, 2002. Born in Lexington, KY, on November 6, 1921, he moved to Rocky Mount, NC with his parents in 1922. He was the son of R.J. Works, Sr., the founder of Works Tobacco Warehouse in Rocky Mount, and Willie Mae Deatherage. He followed in the footsteps of his father in the tobacco auction business, as President of Growers Tobacco Warehouse, and as President of the Rocky Mount Tobacco Board of Trade.
     R.J. Works, Jr. graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1940. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until the outbreak of WWII, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Stationed in England with the 8th Air Force Division, he piloted B17 Bombers over Europe. Before going overseas he married his high school sweetheart, Ella Mae Lane, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Loftin Lane of Rocky Mount. The couple spent 56 years together before her death on January 9, 2000.
     He has one surviving daughter, Carolyn Ashford-Works, of Rocky Mount. His other daughter, Harriet Elizabeth Works Huddleston died in 1998. There are four grandchildren, Raymond Jeffrey Clayton of Rocky Mount; James Byron Clayton of Portland, OR; US Air Force Staff Sgt. Carey Lee Huddleston, stationed in Germany; and Michael Allen Huddleston of Wilson's Mills, NC. There is one great-grandchild, Catherine Renee Clayton of Charlotte, NC. His two sisters, Evelyn Works Raynor and Billie Jo Matthews, and brother-in-law, Tom H. Matthews reside in Rocky Mount. A sister, Margaret Works Threatt Winters, preceded him in death.
     The family will receive visitors at the home, 300 Piedmont Avenue, during the day, and at Johnson Funeral Home, 1912 Sunset Avenue in Rocky Mount from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 26th.

     MELLIE R. DAVENPORT, 97, Nov. 23. Arrangements by Carlisle Funeral Home.

     MELLIE RETHA DAVENPORT, 97, died Saturday, November 23, 2002 at The Fountains at The Albemarle in Tarboro, North Carolina.
     She was born on September 30, 1905, in Edgecombe County, the eldest of eight children born to Retha Johnson and Joe Cephus Davenport.
     She is survived by her sister, Helen D. O'Neal, a niece, Retha O. Deaton and her husband, Mackie, all of Tarboro, North Carolina, and two great-nieces, Mary Helen Deaton of Wilmington, North Carolina and Marian Elizabeth Deaton of Tarboro, North Carolina.
     Miss Davenport attended Edgecombe County Schools, graduated from Conetoe High School, and received a B-certificate in Elementary Education from East Carolina Teachers College in June 1924. 15 years later, she received her A-certificate and in August 1951, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from East Carolina.
     Her 47-year career in education began as a fifth grade teacher at Lamm's School in Wilson County, where she taught from 1924-1928. She continued teaching fifth, seventh, and eight grade classes at Crisp (1928-35), Bethel (1935-39), Snow Hill (1939-42) and returned to Crisp as Building Principal from 1942-56. She began teaching in Tarboro in 1956 and retired as an eight grade instructor in 1971.
     As required by her 1924 teaching contract. Miss Davenport took a vital interest in church and community activities. She held offices in North Carolina Association of Educators, The Class Room Teachers Association, and The Parent and Teachers Association. She served on numerous committees and represented her schools at area and state meetings. She served as President of the district and local units of the North Carolina Retired School Personnel and as Vice President of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She held many offices in the Tarboro Business and Professional Woman's Club and in 1978 was selected as Woman of the year.
     She taught Sunday school in every community where she lived. She was a member of St. James United Methodist Church where she served on the Official Board as Financial Secretary and sang in the choir.
     Miss Mellie had a special interest in all of her students. She remembered them and not one has forgotten her because of her special concern for and understanding of each individual.
     A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at 11 o'clock in the morning at St. James United Methodist Church in Tarboro with burial following in Greenwood Cemetery.

     Ervin was born on January 27, 1924 in Wake County to the late Winnie O'Neal Perry and Matthew E. Perry. He retired with 43 years of service with Seaboard Railroad and served his country in the Korean Conflict.
     Funeral service 3 p.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

     MRS. MARTHA HOELL HARDEE, 81, formerly of Whispering Pines, died Saturday at St. Joseph of the Pines.
     Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Southern Pines United Methodist Church, with Dr. Mark Wethington officiating. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park.
     Born September 21, 1921 in Grimesland, NC, she was daughter of the late Jasper and Lela Elks Hoell.
     Mrs. Hardee was a retired eighth grade math and science teacher in Lexington, NC. As wife of the founder, A.B. Hardee, she aided in the growth of Whispering Pines. She was the founder of the Whispers and was a member of Southern Pines United Methodist Church.
     Surviving are her daughter, Martha Tattersall of Whispering Pines, one son, Ron Hardee of Morehead City and four grandchildren.

     L. WESLEY IVES, Brigadier General, Line NCARNG (Retired), age 75, died November 23, 2002.
     Mr. Ives was born August 30, 1927. He had 40 years of service as Brigadier General with the National Guard and 40 years of service with the State of North Carolina. He was a member of the 30th Support Group, N.C. Troop Command, and Adj. General of the 30th Infantry Division.

     Mrs. Wright died Saturday, November 23, 2002. She was born in Kumomoto, Japan, where she married her husband of 52 years. Cepheus Nobles Wright, moving to Columbia in 1957. After rearing her four sons, she began work as a tailor, working for Lourie's Brittan's, Easley's Tailor Shop, Koppenheimer's and most recently at Weather's Clothiers. Mrs. Wright was a member of Woodfield Park Baptist Church and the Konnichiwa Prayer Group, who will serve as honorary pallbearers.
     Surviving is her husband, sons, George H. Wright, Jerry A. Wright, Jeffery A. Wright, Leroy M. Wright; grandson, Daniel W. Wright, all of Columbia; brother, Tskio Minoda of Kumomoto, Japan.
