John Mitchell, 91, community activist

By Arthur McLean
Staff writer
John Mitchell, industry leader and community activist, died Saturday at the Village Green Care Center. He was 91.

Friends and associates remember Mr. Mitchell as a smart and compassionate man.

“He was a pretty remarkable fellow,” said Dan MacMillan, a retired architect who built the Mitchells’ home when they moved to Fayetteville from Pennsylvania.

Mr. Mitchell and his wife, Rita, came to Fayetteville in 1967 with Rohm and Haas, a nylon fiber manufacturer. During the company’s heyday, more than 2,000 people worked at its Cedar Creek plant.

But Mr. Mitchell will likely be remembered more for his community involvement than his business acumen.

Mr. Mitchell retired shortly before the plant was sold to Monsanto in 1977, and he decided to stay in Fayetteville.

“I always thought it was a great asset to Fayetteville that he stayed here,” said John H. Swope, who helped bring the Rohm and Haas plant to Fayetteville.

“He and his wife immediately melted into the community,” he said.

For many years, Mr. Mitchell was an active supporter of the Boys’ and Girls’ Club in Fayetteville and served on its board.

“John was always trying to save some young boy who’d gone astray,” Mr. MacMillan said.

Mr. Mitchell had advice for college and high school graduates when he spoke to the Observer for a story in 1991. “You have to believe in yourself. And you have to toot your own horn sometimes.”

Despite his advice, Mr. Swope and Mr. MacMillan said Mr. Mitchell was not the kind of person to draw attention to himself for his community work. “He did a lot of things for this community that a lot of people don’t know about,” Mr. Swope said.

Mr. Mitchell’s interest in doing good extended beyond boys’ clubs, including counseling recovering drug addicts and donating to charity throughout his life, said Roy Parker Jr., another long-time friend.

Mr. Mitchell was also one of the founders of what is now the Cape Fear River Assembly, a group dedicated to improving the environmental health of the Cape Fear River, Mr. Parker said.

Arrangements will be announced by Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home.
