An NCMcKay Cache File

Editor's note:  Recently, the active link "Ship EDINBURG Passenger Lists" was removed, and I could not find another copy of it on the Internet.  I thought that I had saved a copy of it, but many searches over several weeks turned up nothing.  As I was looking through a directory on the evening of Wednesday, January 11, 2006, I discovered the saved copy.  Unfortunately, when I had saved it on Wednesday, October 9, 2002, I did not know how to keep all the associated images and other files.  That means that there are certain parts of this cache file that just don't work correctly.  However, most of the web page is as it was.  I have updated the link back to our own NCMcKay Web Page that appears near the bottom of this web page.

This is the Cache file that was saved.

[To top] Additional Information from the Kintyre Magazine Article by Frank Bigwood, M.A.
"The two lists of passengers, which are in Box SC54/2/106 in the Scottish Record Office, refer to two voyages by Edinburgh. One was to Cape Fear in North Carolina in 1770 and the other to the Island of St Johns (Prince Edward Island) in 1771." Edinburgh
"Both voyages are recorded in Customs Quarterly Accounts for Campbeltown. The first cleared out of Campbeltown on 29 August 1770, ...... The second cleared out on the 27 July 1771. (Since the above article appered in The Scottish Genealogist a little more information has come to light about the voyage to Prince Edward Island. ... we learn that she left Campbeltown the 3rd of August 1771 and reached Prince Edward Island on the 17th September.)" The Scottish Genealogist
"We know a little about the Edinburgh of Campbeltown and her trading and fishing activities from the Campbeltown Shipping Register.... She was a brigantine of 79 1/4 tons built at Leith in 1765 almost certainly to take part in the North Highland herring fisheries under the Government's bounty scheme in the winter and to undertake general trading voyages for the rest of the year. She was 51 feet long and 19 feet 6 inches maximum breadth, as measured by the customs officials....the likelihood is that the Edinburgh was about 9 feet in depth from deck to keel.... In 1770 and 1771 she had four owners: Peter Stewart, writer and merchant; and Alexander McAlester, writer and merchant; John McAlister, merchant; and Alexander McDonald, merchant. Her master from the start had been John McMichael from Southend, who was about 32 or 33 at the time of these voyages. He continued as master in the 1770s after the Edinburgh had passed into the hands of Duncan Ballantine and Company in 1774. She had a crew of eight for trading voyages and seventeen when she went herring fishing." Edinburgh Campbeltown Shipping Register Edinburgh Edinburgh

The folowing information has been provided by Frank Bigwood on September 21, 1998.
"Dear Harold Ralston

Thank you for your E-mail of 10 September.

I am sorry to have delayed so long in answering but I had an idea of
sending you a re-edited version of your  text. However, I have thought
better of this and for the moment would only wish you to change two things
which are quite clearly wrong - the number of people who travelled from
Campbeltown which was, I believe, 61 as there is evidence that Hector
McEachine did not sail and I would judge that the lack of payments against
the names after his suggests that they did not sail either; and the date of
3rd August which is wrong and should be 1st August.

It is my view that the migration of people from Argyll to PEI  was not, as
it is so often represented, a case of one or two ships arriving with large
numbers of settlers but much more in the nature of a slow trickle and that
many more ships than we know about took people across in small numbers in
the late 1760s and early 1770s.  After all, Campbeltown (and other) vessels
regularly sailed out to the Newfoundland fishing between 1765 and 1769.
Hector McEachine was the master of one of them, the Dun which was owned by
the Stewarts. It is a great pity that the Stewart papers have not survived
like those of Alexander McAlester because they probably would have
contained some of the information we are looking for.

Yours,
 Frank Bigwood"
More information and conjecture about the ship and voyages are on page 9 - 17 of "The Kintyre Antiquarian and Natural History Society Magazine", No. 41, Spring 1997.

"15 November 2000, I am not a relative of Mary McMath, but had an elder uncle who passed away in 1982. His families were McMath, Porter and McBrydes and, were from Campbelton. Some came to America & some to Australia. Perhaps someone would like the small amount of info I have. It began in the late 1800s. This uncle was an only child and had no issue. But, his families were so wonderful. One descendent, my uncle's 2nd cousin, was Ginger Rogers, the wonderful movie star. Her name was really Virginia McMath. She, too, was an only child. " Betty J.
